BCC November: 1000

Shin Seha’s new album [1000] centers around the theme of self-expression. While the album employs bold sonic choices, it is filled with a diverse range of genres, each crafted with meticulous and delicate detail. The title “1000,” a unit of weight, symbolizes the unshakable thoughts and convictions that no one can move.

The event <November BCC: 1000>, held on November 28, 2019, celebrated the release of Shin Seha’s album 1000.
Part 1 featured a live band performance, followed by Part 2 which included a Q&A session and a gift raffle.

With neatly styled dark sideburns and sharp eyebrows, Shin Seha’s presence on stage was striking from the first moment. His lyrics—almost confessional in tone—evoked deep empathy and nods from the audience. His delicate voice combined with synths, the powerful drum work of Kwondol (Workmanship), the bass lines of Moonhee Kim (Moon & Bouncers), and the guitar of Mogwa came together to create a performance of remarkable sonic richness, sending chills throughout the packed suite.

The fluid, swaying movements in sync with the music were infectious—viewers found themselves wanting to mimic his playful, elastic, and buoyant choreography, which carried the charm of feeling like a swing in motion.

After the performance, the Q&A session featured questions submitted by fans through social media. Two unreleased tracks were pressed into a special vinyl record using Side Note Club’s Lathe Cutter and given away as a lucky draw prize. Below are some highlights from the fan Q&A.

Fan Q&A Highlights

Fan: Your music feels refined and timeless. What mindset do you have when approaching your work?
Seha: I listen to a lot of great records from the past and present to draw inspiration. Lately, I’ve been into Solange, Rexy, and Wally Badarou. I enjoy many genres—hip hop, G-funk, and more—so I tried to weave together the sounds I love into this album.

Fan: Your lyrics feel poetic and almost like inner monologues. Where do you get inspiration for your writing style?
Seha: These days, most of my inspiration comes from the notes I’ve written over time. Like a journal, I jot down fragmented thoughts and emotions, and later I revisit them and turn them into songs.

Fan: How did the collaboration with Uhm Jung-hwa come about?Seha: A few years ago, Uhm Jung-hwa came to one of my DJ gigs, and I sent her a thank-you message afterward—that was our first contact. When I was conceptualizing 1000, I wanted an artist who embodies honesty and carries the kind of weight the album addresses. As a female artist who has long earned love and respect from so many younger musicians, Uhm Jung-hwa was the first person who came to mind. When I asked her if she would join the project, she gladly agreed.

신세하의 새로운 앨범 [1000]은 ‘자신을 표현하는 것’이라는 테마를 중심으로 과감한 사운드를 활용하지만 촘촘하고 섬세한 구성이 돋보이는 다양한 장르의 음악이 담겨있다. 무게를 나타내는 ‘1000’이라는 타이틀은 아무도 밀지 못하는 자신의 생각 또는 고집을 뜻한다.

2019년 11월 28일 진행된 <November BCC: 1000>은 가수 신세하의 앨범 ‘1000’을 기념하는 자리가 마련되었다. 1부는 신세하의 라이브 밴드 공연 그리고 2부에서는 Q&A 세션 및 선물 추첨이 이어졌다.

깔끔하게 정리한 짙은 구레나룻, 날카로운 눈썹으로 무대에 오른 신세하의 모습은 한눈에 봐도 강렬했으며, 일종에 고백에 가까운 가사들은 듣는 사람에게 벅찬 공감과 끄덕거림을 불러 일으켰다. 그의 간드러지는 목소리와 신스 사운드, 드럼의 콴돌(워크맨십), 베이스의 김문희(문앤바운서스), 그리고 기타의 모과가 하나 되어 연주해내는 완성도 높은 사운드는 스위트룸을 가득 채운 관중들에게 전율을 선사했다.

음악에 맞춰 흐느적대는 춤사위 또한 보는 이들을 하여금 따라 하고 싶을 만큼 경쾌함과 유연하고도 탄력감 있는 그의 곡들은 마치 그네를 타는듯한 재미난 매력을 보여줬다.

공연이 끝난 후, Q & A 세션에서는 소셜미디어 댓글에 달린 팬들의 질문을 답변하고, 신세하의 미공개 곡 두 개를 담아 Side Note Club의 Lathe Cutter로 제작된 스페셜 바이닐 레코드를 럭키 드로우로 증정하는 시간을 가졌다. 팬들의 질문과 답변을 아래에서 확인할 수 있다.

팬- 음악이 세련되고, 시대에 얽매이지 않는 것 같다. 음악을 만들 때 어떤 생각으로 다가가는지 궁금하다.

세하- 과거에도 그리고 지금도 듣기 좋은 명반들을 많이 찾아 듣고 영감을 받는 편이예요. 최근에는 Solange, Rexy, Wally Badarou를 즐겨 들었어요. 저는 힙합 음악, G-funk 등 다양한 장르를 좋아하는 편이여서 즐겨 듣는 음악들을 잘 섞어서 이번 앨범에 담아내려고 노력했어요.

팬-가사가 시적이고 혼잣말 같기도 해서 위로를 많이 얻는다. 가사 스타일이나 단어들의 영감을 어디서 받는지 궁금하다.

세하 – 요즘에 가사를 쓰면서 영감을 받는 것은, 제가 써 났던 노트들이에요.  일기장 같이 단편적인 생각이나 감정들을 막 써놓았던 것들을 다시 음악으로 옮기는 작업을 하고 있어요.

팬-어떻게 엄정화와 작업을 하게 되었나?

세하- 몇 년 전 제가 DJ 공연을 한 날 엄정화 누나가 오셨을 때, 누나에게 감사의 메시지를 보내면서 처음 연락이 되었어요. [1000] 앨범을 구상하던 당시, 자신에 대해 가장 솔직하게 표현하고, 앨범의 주제처럼 무게감 있는 아티스트가 누구일까 생각해 봤을 때, 오랫동안 수많은 후배 가수에게 사랑과 존경을 받는 여성 가수로서 엄정화 누나가 가장 먼저 떠올랐어요. 앨범에 참여를 부탁드렸더니 흔쾌히 허락하셨죠.
